Homelessness - Adolescent Medicine

The Children's Hospital at Westmead's Department of Adolescent Medicine has been at the forefront of developments in the field of adolescent health and medical care for the past 25 years. As well as pioneering a comprehensive, integrated and creative model of care linking in-patient, out-patient and community services for young people, the Department has undertaken focused research, provided undergraduate and postgraduate education and training and supported policy planning activities at both state and national levels. 

The unit is involved in the care of homeless adolescents through their outreach programs and work within the community. The Unit is committed to all adolescents having the opportunity to grow and develop to their full potential.

The unit cares for adolescents with chronic illnesses, complex adolescent health disorders such as post viral fatigue syndrome, eating disorders, obesity and gynaecological concerns. They provide services within High Street Youth Health Service, and through Teen Link – a service for teenage children of parents undergoing the Methadone Program in Western Sydney. 

The unit is committed to providing training for doctors across many health disciplines and from around the world leading to an international improvement in the provision of adolescent health care. The education program is complemented by a robust research program which influences the provision of healthcare nationally and internationally.
